Glenn R. Johnson Scale Models, Inc. was started by Glenn R. Johnson in 1964. Glenn had been creating award winning models since childhood and spent two years as a model builder in the Los Angeles area in his late teens. After that company went out of business, Glenn moved south to Orange County and started his own model shop. Initially, he had only a small space and worked alone bringing in a couple of freelance model builders if he was busy.
He soon outgrew this space and in 1966 moved to a larger 1,200 square foot space. He continued to hire freelance model builders until 1974 when he hired on his first full-time company employee. Then in 1979 after renting several extra spaces in the area, the company purchased a historic 6,000 square foot building in downtown Orange, restored and redesigned the interior to meet the needs of the company.
from a successful career of building models and running the business Glenn asked Anthony Prevosto his shop foreman to take over the shop. Anthony started working with Glenn in the early eighties to learn the trade of model building from the very basic to become a skilled modeller in a couple of years, back then everything was scratch built using various tools of the trade. Anthony has worked at various companies in the past polishing his skills as model builder and business owner. Working with such firms as Architects Pacifica Ltd. Irvine California. Lacayo Architects Honolulu, Hawaii, and Scale Models Unlimited of Chicago, Illinois. Currently the company has 12 full-time employees of which 10 are professional model builders.
We have been in the model making business for many years and have seen the advent of many new technologies. As these technologies advance, they become pivotal to the model-making process.
We use laser cutters for precision cuts a 3d Lithography that prints in 3d from ABS plastic a CNC mill to create wax models. (See pictures below)
Of course, there's no substitute for having qualified model-makers on staff.
